Description
Airspeed Indicator Fahrtmesser Fl 22231, 80 – 750 km/h Luftwaffe Sally BomberHere is an original WWII era Airspeed Indicator Fahrtmesser Fl 22231, indicating speeds from 80 750 km h, as used in aircraft of the German Luftwaffe, such as the fighters Messerschmitt Bf 109, Bf 110, and bombers Junkers Ju 87, Ju 88, and Dornier Do 217. This indicator shows Fl 22231 embossed on its dial, and Fl 22230 on its rear case. The dial is clearly of the Fl 22231, so it is possible that the rear housing was replaced using that from a Fl 22230
According to the Maintenance Interchangeability gude dated Feb 1945
in the main photo
The gyroscope was key to successful instrument flight from the early 1900's
This pneumatic gyro appears quite similar to those used in RAF aircraft produced by Sperry (especially the British label "Do Not Jar
Has a service label dated 1966
It is different in its physical configuration as needed for installation in the sighting ring rimming the blister of the central fire director
The fuel/air ratio is displayed for the left engine on the upper scale
perhaps evidence of its use in the US Navy's version of the B-17
whereas the 'periscope' was inserted through a shutter mounted in the ceiling of the aircraft
The appearance of red diagonal lines indicates that the wheels are not in the locked position either up or down
