Description
"God's Acre, Caanan, CT" by Walter Dubois Richards, Amer., (1907-2006) WoodcutLithograph, ca. 1940, ed. 200, 14 x 9 7 8, signed, titled and annotated A. P. in pencil, on warm white wove paper. This large and stunning lithograph is a tour de force showing Richards technical precision and emotive command of the medium. This beautiful and stately congregational church is located in New Caanan, CT; the meeting house for which dates to 1843, the chapel, parlor and church school dating to 1953. It was a favorite subject for Richards,
surface loss center top & right margin edge verso from previous hinge removal
A fine impression of this New York Central Park subject
on smooth cream wove parchment type paper
thus contributing to the relative rarity of the image today
8-3/8 x 13-1/16
with a painted overmat border
1940's-60's
but extremely rare as according to Scneiderman
all absorbed from study of Native American sources and art of the Northwest Coast instead of that of Europe
There is a very pale mat line
Based in Newport
but even more so in their genuine feeling for their subject
